Hey, Poptropicacti, happy September! Even though it’s the dreaded month of back to school, the end of summer and the beginning of fall, it’s also a joyful time in the Pop Community, as it is Poptropica’s birthday month! The game is turning NINE years old, it’s existed for almost a decade! Which is pretty old for a computer game. Sadly, the Creators have never revealed the actual day it was created, but whatever, we get to celebrate all month.
And so, as I mentioned in a couple other posts, Theory Thursdays will be replaced with Throwback Thursdays for this month only, celebrating this amazing game and how far it has come.
As this is a 4 week event, I will be splitting up the history of Poptropica into 4 periods, each covering 3 years, with the exception of Week 4, which will mainly be about the future. The sections are…
- Week 1: The Beginning of Poptropica (2007, 2008, 2009)
- Week 2: Popular Poptropica (2010, 2011, 2012)
- Week 3: The Rise of the SUIs (2013, 2014, 2015)
- Week 4: The New Poptropica (2016 & Beyond)
Now sit back and relax as we travel back in time, to a simpler time…
Not a lot happened in 2007, as Poptropica was only released in the September of that year and it wasn’t the most popular game ever back then. Then again, it’s was also the most important time of the game, as Poptropica wouldn’t exist, or at least not the game we know today, if these events did not happen.
The game didn’t just pop out of nowhere, of course. Jeff Kinney apparently came up with the idea for it one sunny afternoon sometime in 2006 while mowing is lawn. After that I guess he got a team of people together, the first Creators.
And so, throughout 2006 and most of 2007, those very same men and women worked together to create the very first concepts for what was then know as “Poptropolis.” Stupid Nickelodeon already had their own virtual world called Nicktropolis, which launched in January 2007. Let’s just say, I’m not too surprised that game didn’t survive long…
Thus they had to change the name to what we all know and love today, Poptropica.
After months and months of hard work, Poptropica released to the world sometime in September 2007, nearly 9 years ago. Even though the only islands were Early Poptropica and Shark Tooth, the game had lots of potential.
To be honest, I don’t know much about what happened in the world of Poptropica in 2007 and a good half of 2008, since I only started playing in March 2015.
Time Twisted came out, renamed as Time Tangled, and the so called Monster Carnival was mysteriously removed from the map and replaced with 24 Carrot Island. Other than that, I don’t really know what else happened, no one was writing anything down, or should I say typing.
On July 17th, 2008, that all changed when the Creators’ Blog opened.
Finally, there was a written record of all the cool things happening within the game. Not only would current players find out what was to come, but players from years and years in the future could look back and see what they missed. It was a game changer.
And just a couple weeks later, on July 26th, the PHB (Poptropica Help Blog) was created, marking the start of the Poptropica community. If it wasn’t for the PHB, my blog, and dozens of others, would not exist. Yeah, this was a pretty major event.
With two blogs, and many more to follow, I realized that a lot more happened in the year of 2008.
Many islands popped into the scene, them being Super Power, Spy, and Nabooti! Big Nate was also announced, and a lot of comic strips were posted. Along with that, the first sneak peaks for Astro-Knights and Counterfeit released, and Reality TV ended up being postponed.
Some smaller events that occurred were a Halloween costume contest and the Super Hot Dog Boy comic, among other hints that I don’t feel like talking about.
The year ended on a merry note, as the last Creators’ Blog post was on Chrismas Eve.
The beginning of 2009 was similar to the end of 2009- lots of sneak peaks for upcoming islands, and a bunch, I mean a BUNCH of Big Nate comics were posted.
Not for long though.
On Janurary 16th, 2009 (exactly 7 years before the creation of this here blog!) former Creator Vlad the Viking started the “Snapshot Saga” series. Basically, he would go around the islands and take pictures of Poptropicans in common rooms. Even though that sounds kinda boring nowadays, it lasted quite a few months.
In mid February, Big Nate Island finally came out, which halted those comics, which to be honest were getting a tad annoying.
Around that time, the first sneak peak of the Multiverse feature was announced. Well, people didn’t know what it was back then.
The next few months were filled with more sneak peaks, for both Astro-Knights, other islands and Multiverse, and Snapshot Saga.
Finally, on June 3rd, Astro-Knights was released…with an Early Access pass. Yeah, people used credits to play the island a week early. Same with the next couple islands. Little did they know it would evolve into membership…
Multiverse also released on July 28th, making Poptropica a much more social game. Really, could you imagine Pop without it?!
Other than that, a TON of store items were being adding, many of which are still used today. Also, this picture…
The Haunted House mini game was brought to the world on October 8th to celebrate Halloween, and after months of sneak peaks, Counterfeit came out on December 21st, but only to those with the Early Access pass. Everyone else had to wait till the New Year, January 4th to be exact.
And to mark the last day of 2009, this post was posted…
I would continue, but sadly, we just do not have the time (or patience) to get to 2010 today. I guess that means we shall be continuing on our throwback journey next Thursday! Until then, I hope you have a wonderful week…and school week. I know you all hate school, but you need to go or else you’ll be a fool! Learning is good for you! That being said, I need to finish my summer reading, bye.
